The wife of a candidate for Parliament is having an affair with the brother of her husband's rival. Her lover is running for election on a promise of building a railway that the community needs, but a wealthy landowner won't give permission for the railway to be built over his land. When the landowner is later found dead, suspicion falls on the adulterous candidate.

The Queen of Spades or Pique Dame is a 1927 German silent drama film directed by Aleksandr Razumnyj and starring Jenny Jugo, Rudolf Forster and Henri De Vries. It is one of many film adaptations of the Russian writer Alexander Pushkin's 1834 short story The Queen of Spades.

An adaptation of the eponymous fantasy novella by Alexander Pushkin. It tells the story of the gambling mania that seizes a young Russian officer, Hermann, and ultimately causes his downfall. His best friend, Tomsky, is played by Jean Rochefort.

Russia, 1835. Lieutenant Hermann, a compulsive gambler, is fascinated by an infallible martingale held by Countess Tomski, nicknamed The Queen of Spades. The day Hermann wants to wring the secret from her, the countess dies of fear. Following this tragic scene, Hermann sinks into dementia. Luckily, Lisa, his frail lover, brings him back to life and happiness.

In a marginalized New Orleans still trying desperately to recover from Katrina, a private eye on the fringes of society reluctantly investigates two murders - one present day, one thirty years old. But even as detective Jack Spade encounters ancient French Quarter jewelers, shifty bayou drunks, rich uptown socialites, mysterious street prostitutes, exotic voodoo fortune tellers, corrupt police lieutenants, and homicidal Mardi Gras jesters - none of whom he can trust individually - he can't continue to ignore the mounting evidence that his father may have been involved in both crimes.

A prestidigitator, one of the best, is about to perform a number of illusions and brings to his aid a pack of playing cards. He selects the King of Spades, endows him with life and seats him at the table with himself, and they proceed to play a game of cards. The King of Spades shows a disposition to be ugly and is immediately squelched. This is a remarkably good picture, interesting from start to finish.
